Directions:

You are to write an ethical profile paper that recognizes the formative influence of your family, heroes, and personal style on you as an ethical professional. This paper will provide a profile of you in regards to your ethical and professional practice. You will be required to include information on who you are as an ethical professional, how this course has shaped your unique ethical decision-making style, and the areas in which you feel still need further development.

Include the following four sections in your paper: 1.Ethical Autobiography: First, explain how you think through and determine what is “right” and “wrong” (personally and professionally) in your own daily life. Second, identify four examples of ethical behaviors and explain how your cultural heritage has shaped your values. Third, describe the nature of the four ethical behaviors you see in yourself. 2.Professional/Ethical Hero: First, identify an ethical “hero,” an individual that has most impressed you and serves as your role model because of their professional/ethical presence (i.e., sensitivity, appropriate boundaries, and respect for privacy, ethical commitment, and ethical courage). Elaborate on his or her ethical characteristics. Discuss how this person can (or does) serve as a role model for others in the helping profession. Second, describe how this “hero” has influenced your value system. Click here to read an article on ethical hero. 3.Ethical Decision-Making Style: This section will articulate your implicit style in terms of ethical decision making. Although there are specific models that help facilitate ethical decision making, everyone has his or her own unique style. Taking into consideration the ethical decision-making models presented in this course, identify the style that reflects your early and ongoing experiences with moral values and issues that has been influenced and shaped by your parents, relatives, peers, and valued adults in your life, such as a teacher or coach. Use what you have written from your autobiography to supplement this discussion. In summary, explain your implicit ethical decision-making style, including how this course and your cultural heritage have served as influential factors. 4.Professional and Ethical Development: Ethical development is, for most, a career-long process. In the last section of your paper, please identify at least two areas discussed in this module/course where you feel you would benefit from more development. Lastly, suggest ways in which you can acquire your further development.

Please include information from two or more external scholarly references using APA formatting for all citations.

Your paper should be approximately 6–8 pages in length, be double-spaced, in 12 point, Times New Roman font with normal 1” margins; be written in APA style; and be free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page with a running head, an abstract, and a reference page.

Case Study James is a community counseling student who is interning with the College Counseling Center at the local university. James is a 25 year-old Caucasian male, who attended a private high school in a small rural town. In terms of being a counselor, James admits that one of his challenges is that he has not experienced much diversity in his relationships. He states that this is not a significant issue because he plans on opening a private practice in his hometown as soon as he graduates. Since he “knows the town” he doesn’t feel that this is a big deal. Also, in terms of finding clients, James states that he is sure he will be able to get referrals because his father works for the town newspaper and will run an ad as soon as he moves home. James admits he has no clinical experience but is pleased, upon arriving at his internship site, to see that his ex-girlfriend is going to be his assigned clinical supervisor. Since they have not seen each other in years, James figures that meeting once a week will give them a good opportunity to catch up on “old times”. James also figures that she could continue to supervise him in private practice until he receives his license. James is relieved because he knows she won’t mind, since he will be graduating in nine months, if he puts her credential, Licensed Professional Counselor, after his name since she is supervising him. After discussing private practice, James asks his ex-girlfriend if he can begin to see clients right away because he is anxious to get experience and begin working on his practice. Since she figured he would be a pretty good counselor, she agreed and paired him up with Lisa, a 21 year-old Latina female. During the first session, James was running late and was unable to fully cover all of the intake documents with Lisa. He put them aside and said, “We don’t really need to review these. It is just paperwork required by the Center. Please sign here.” As the counseling session continued, James thought he might have recognized symptoms associated with depression including decreased motivation, loss of appetite and overall dissatisfaction. He thought about bringing these up with his supervisor but forgot once he left the session. James continued to meet with Lisa. The first few sessions focused mainly on her recent break-up with her boyfriend and the resulting academic difficulties. She was very concerned that her career dream of becoming a lawyer may be in jeopardy. In the third session, Lisa casually mentioned that she began to experience depressive symptoms as a child when her mother’s partner began to physically abuse her at the age of 5½ years. Lisa told her mother about the abuse, but she did not intervene. Shortly after the physical abuse began, the man began to also sexually abuse her. Once again, Lisa reported this to her mother and also to a teacher at her school, but nothing was ever done. Lisa reported that when she was 7, she placed an unknown prescription medication of her mother’s into this man’s alcoholic drink. Later that same day, the man experienced a stroke and was rushed to the hospital where he later died. Lisa also reported learning that her mother’s partner’s stroke and subsequent death were related to the combination of prescription medication and alcohol. The client has never told anyone other than James that she had placed medication in this man’s drink.

Directions: • Read the case study provided and identify all three of the ethical dilemmas presented. • Describe the nature and all dimensions of the three ethical issues. • Identify the ethical code numbers and definitions of each issue presented using both the APA and ACA codes. • Discuss alternative courses of action that could be taken by the counselor to rectify each dilemma. • Describe the implications of each alternative action; lay out the limitations and advantages of each alternative considered. • Choose one course of action and provide a justification for this selection. • Describe the ethical decision-making model (from your course materials) you used throughout the process to arrive at a final decision (i.e., Forrester-Miller and Davis). Make sure you outline each step. You will be graded on the process you used to arrive at your recommendations and the reasoning behind picking a specific recommendation (and not the actual recommendation itself). You should utilize and cite at least two peer-reviewed journal articles to include in your research. The body of the paper should be no less than 5 pages in length. Your paper should be double-spaced, in 12 point Times New Roman font, with normal 1-inch margins, written in APA style, and free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page with a running head, an abstract, and a reference page.

Course Case Study Joe, a thirty-five-year-old, male mental health counselor, received a client referral, thirty-five-year-old Jill, from a community counseling clinic. He began providing counseling services to her. Jill’s complaint was that she was unsatisfied with her current job as a bank teller and was experiencing mild anxiety and depression. Joe had been providing services to Jill for three weeks when she disclosed that she was confused about her sexuality because she experienced sexual attraction toward some women. Joe immediately responded to Jill with wide eyes and a shocked look. He told Jill that he was a traditional Catholic, who felt that this type of feeling was immoral and wrong. He informed her that she should avoid thinking about this and pray for forgiveness. He also told her that he felt uncomfortable talking about the issue any further. Jill continued to talk to Joe about dealing with her family issues. Joe had recently read about a new technique and immediately became excited about trying it. He explained to her that he had read an article in a magazine about a new technique called rebirthing. The new technique was being used in Europe to help people change their views about their relationships with their family. Joe said, “It is supposed to be really effective in almost wiping out your memory of your family; it is like hypnosis.” “I would really like to try it on you today, what do you think?” Jill declined his offer and continued to talk about her family. Joe thought to himself that even though Jill said no, he was still going to try to hypnotize her as they talked because he thought she could benefit from the technique. Jill disclosed that she was raised in a traditional Asian American home with many cultural influences and culture-specific rules and behavior. Jill was struggling with balancing her individualism and her cultural heritage. Joe explained to her that because he was living and working in a rural community, mostly consisting of people of East European descent, he could not relate to Jill’s culture and the issues with which she was struggling. He apologized and explained that he was not required to study these cultural issues because of his geographical location. Jill moved on to talk about her depression. She began talking about feeling lonely and how it contributed to her depression. During a counseling session several months later, she revealed that she was attracted to Joe and would like a closer, intimate relationship with him. Joe, aware that he was also attracted to Jill, talked about his feelings toward her but explained that engaging in a relationship outside the established counseling relationship was unethical. He informed her that because of the mutual feelings of attraction, the counseling relationship would be ineffective and that he would refer her to another counselor for continued services. Jill agreed, and they terminated the counseling relationship. Later, she contacted him to continue counseling and to discuss the referral. Joe agreed to meet her that evening at a restaurant and bring her the referral information. That night they began an intimate sexual relationship. Joe never got around to providing the referral for Jill even though he was aware of her ongoing state of depression and anxiety. Joe stopped seeing Jill after a month of intimate sexual encounters. Joe enjoyed the relationship but felt guilty due to the unethical nature of the relationship. Because of his continued concern about Jill’s depression, Joe considered going to his current clinical supervisor to discuss the case but decided against it. This was because he and his supervisor were good friends and he suspected his supervisor would be hurt by knowing the real reason he had been cancelling get-togethers. Joe decided to call Jill’s boss at the bank to check on her and see how she was doing. He called her boss and explained that he had been counseling her for anxiety and depression and wanted to check if she was feeling fine. Her boss informed Joe that Jill had quit her job and was in the county hospital undergoing treatment for severe depression. Joe quickly hung up and decided not to call or visit the bank again. After thinking it over, Joe decided that general counseling might not be for him. He decided to begin marriage and family therapy. He ordered some business cards and advertised in the yellow pages. He thought, “After all, I am a mental health counselor, and it can’t be hard to counsel a couple. You don’t need anything special. I already have one degree, and that’s enough!”

Describe the ethical issues related to cultural competence.

Examine the influence of your own personal values as related to the diversity issues presented in this case. Reflect on how you felt as you read the case study, how your values came into play, and how you would handle your values in a situation such as this.

Make recommendations based on your readings and the APA or ACA ethics codes.

Be sure to apply specific ethical principles 2 PAGES LONG DOUBLE SPACED TIMES NEW ROMAN

Social media can be a powerful tool to help you get the word out to a wide audience in a relatively short amount of time.

Imagine that you are organizing a fundraiser for a local charity. Explore the various social media outlets discussed in this module or that you are aware of from your own personal and professional use (examples include Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Instagram, etc.). Compose two announcements advertising the event to be posted on two different social media sites. The first should be geared toward your friends, family, and other social acquaintances. The second should be written for co-workers or professional colleagues or acquaintances. What types of media would you include in your announcements? Written, photographic, video, or audio? Would the same media be appropriate for both announcements? Where could you get this media? Is it OK to copy whatever clip-art you find on the web? Why or why not? Is it OK to use part of your favorite song? Why or why not? Discuss which social network site would be most appropriate for each example and explain why. Be sure to include a brief reflection on the differences in tone, style, and content of the two postings in terms of their intended audiences.
