In his article, Johansson (2007) explores the potential issues met by researchers which hinder them from capturing the sufficient and eligible history of psychoanalysis and the critical questions it presents regarding the openness and transparency of the society. So as to achieve his objective, he examines various key issues encountered by different researchers when they embark on writing the psychoanalysis history of a particular country. Besides, he explores the importance of reconstructing feature of the psychoanalytical practices and analyzes the details on the current opposition between the current academic and psychoanalytic societies ideals regarding the gradual changes that the society has been undergoing through for the past three decades.

Johansson (2007) conducts desk research that helps him identify and evaluate various categorical challenges based on his experiences as well as findings from numerous studies carried out by other globally renowned psychoanalysts. At the end of his article, he draws to a conclusion that every accurate and compelling history account evolves due to the interaction between distance and proximity. That is, too much proximity changes an historical account into a tribute or in other terms, a congratulatory chronicle. On the other hand, the far the distance, the higher the risk of a historian turning into a mere observer with a separate perspective which misleads them from connecting the cardinal points of the historical theories, practices or movements to be studied, analyzed and chronicled.

The article depicted Johansson’s incredible ability to compile a comprehensive study paper from an extensively researched topic which required access to uncensored archives of significant interests to many historians. Additionally, his study is solely based on desk research whereby he addressed his major concerns and supported it from the findings recovered from the studies of other famous psychoanalysts. However, he is biased to challenge faced as he fails to discuss particulars of various forms of psychotherapy and ways in which the psychoanalysts may involve risk taking. Despite, the author supported his assertions appropriately and sufficiently by the use of the numerous credible resources as stated above.
