Different ways exist to look into process design. The types of process involved, service or product, dictated the use of this processes. We will use beer to represent product process design and micro-finance service to depict the service process design.
Under product sector, there exist four types of approaches to the process design; these are continuous flow, job shop, batch and assembly line. Under continuous flow, the movement of materials within this process is continuous. Assembly line is similar to the continuous flow but rather than just being continuous, it goes through various stages where operations are assigned to each stage. Batch involves splitting the process into smaller parts. Operations for a particular part are done on all the batches before proceeding of the process. Job shop process requires the handling, to full completion, of all the tasks involved. Job shop process is not suitable for beer production as it applies to products with a high degree of variability, which in this case are mostly tailor made.
Assembly line and continuous flow are a good choice for a products requiring high production volume which batch approach is not an efficient approach. Assembly line approach involves complex procedures and requires a lock in in a particular stage before commencement of the successor stage. Therefore, continuous flow is the best suited process that offers high efficiency in beer production and is relatively simple
Under the service sector, there are three approaches to the process design. These are self-service, production line and personal attention. Under self-service, consumers are included in the service generation process to maximize efficiency. This approach is conspicuous in the software production industry where aim for an efficient product and speedy outcome is the goal. In the production line approach, the company controls every aspect of production to ensure quality of the service offered. This approach is mostly used in organizations that require fast outcome but at the same time quality services and products an example being music recording studio. Lastly, the personal attention approach mainly gives focus to enhancing and maintaining good relationships with customers. The approach is wide spread in organizations that require good customer loyalty coupled with satisfaction an example being the telecommunication industry. Micro-finance services will definitely go for personal attention and production line as the best option to maximize efficiency and productivity. This combination is one that’s most suitable for micro-finance institutions. Production line is suited for the head office and organization of branch offices as well and how they will run. Personal attention would be applicable when interacting with customers to ensure satisfaction as well as having robust systems like ATMs and online financial services that meet the needs of consumers at a personal level.
