Chapter 5 is an extremely important chapter. Nonverbal communication speaks volumes about an individual whether they know it or not. When you speak about nonverbal communication within an interview session, it could be the difference between getting a job or not. Most of the time when we hear the term nonverbal communication, we generally think negatively about how an individual sits in a chair, uses facial expressions and body language that denotes non-positive impressions, and we know what they say about impressions, “You can only have one first impression”. If you are in an interviewing scenario, you certainly do not want to leave a lasting negative impression.
Nonverbal communication can also be positive. As one says “putting your best foot forward” will make for a positive reaction. To do that, one must acquire nonverbal communication skills. For example, you are in the thick of your interview, all seems to be going well, when just then, you are asked a question that you have no idea how to answer. Your interviewers, if you are not careful will be able to detect you have no idea how to answer. How do they know this? By your facial expression, or your body language, like squirming in your chair, or rolling your hands on the table. Being in complete control throughout the interview is difficult, but manageable. Staying calm and consistent in your interview will help you through difficult times. On the other hand, one must guard against being to arrogant in the manner in which they respond to questions. Yes, panels are looking for decisive leaders, but being decisive and not being arrogant is the key.
Good nonverbal communication skills would include: good eye contact with interviewers, non distracting hand movements, an erect position while sitting, and using your personality when the time is right. An example of this would be to smile occasionally, laugh when the interviewers laugh. Using good nonverbal communication will be your best asset outside of good answers to questions.
Take a look at Appendix # 8 Scenario Questions, read set C, to get a feel for how the questions are. Now ask some one to act as an interviewer and ask you either SET A or SET B of the questions. It will be very important that you not read these sets first as they no longer will be impromptu type questions. Ask the person asking the questions to try and watch your nonverbal communication skills and write them do as they see them, they can share with you after the questioning. It is important that you take the interview serious, as this activity can teach you much about yourself. As far as the correct responses are concerned, that could be another way for you to discuss leadership decision making by asking your administrators how they might respond. In any case you are sure to gain much.

Your Principal has gone to a meeting and a cadre of parents and community leaders including the clergy, have come to see you demanding that something be done immediately regarding a male teacher that has made sexual advances to a number of female students in the school. You have a male student (for a female screening candidate) female student (for a male screening candidate) that you suspect has marijuana in their underwear. Reliable students who said they saw it have also reported this to you. Your school resource officer is off campus. How do you handle this situation?
Your Principal is out of the building and a family arrives to enroll their youngsters in the school. None of the students have their shot records with them as they have come from out of state.
