Assessment 3-Assignment: USING TECHNOLOGY IN STATISTICS
Question 1 (49 marks)
Some employees of Western Fields Limited were asked to fill in a questionnaire for health insurance purposes. The sample data from the employees’ questionnaires is provided in the Employee Questionnaire Excel file. The Excel file contains information about:
• the employee’s identification number
• the employee’s age,
• the number of children that an employee has
• the employee’s salaries in thousands of Australian dollars, and • the gender of the employee
Required:
a) Download the Excel file and copy the spreadsheet for your group to a new Excel file. (2 marks)
The spreadsheets are labelled as G1 to G12. Select the relevant spreadsheet based on your group number and use it to answer the following questions. For example G1 contains the data for group 1 and members of group 1 should copy the material from G1 spreadsheet to a new Excel file.
b) Indicate the level of measurement of the four variables contained in the spreadsheet and give reasons for your answers. (8 marks)
c) Use the Excel COUNT function to find the number of employees who filled in questionnaires. (2 marks)
d) Suppose that the Human Resource Manager tells you that there are currently 150 employees working at Western Fields Limited. Explain how you could use the information provided to make a statistical inference. (2 marks)
e) Suppose you want to investigate the relationship between gender and children. One way to do this is using Excel’s PivotTable feature that can be accessed via the insert menu.
• Download and read the Microsoft Excel help document entitled “HOW TO CREATE A PIVOT TABLE”.
• Prepare a Pivot Table using Gender as your row labels, Children as your column labels and Count of Gender as your values.
• Copy and paste the your final Pivot Table to a word document (2 marks)
f) Use the Pivot Table you prepared in part (e) of this question to answer the following questions.
Show all your workings:
i. How many female employees have two or more children? (2 marks)
ii. How many male employees have at least three children? (2 marks)
iii. Calculate the probability that an employee has no children. Comment on the calculated probability. (2 marks)
iv. Suppose a female employee is selected at random. What is the probability that the chosen employee has at least two children? Comment on the calculated probability. (2 marks)
g) Suppose you want to examine the relationship between the gender of employees and the number of children an employee has.
• Prepare a new Pivot table with Gender as your row labels, Children as your column labels and Sum of Children as your values.
• Copy and paste the your second Pivot Table to a word document (1 mark)
h) Use the pivot table prepared in part (g) of this question to answer the following questions:
i. What is the total number of children for all the employees surveyed? (1 mark)
ii. Which gender of employees has the most children? (1 mark)
iii. Which gender has the least number of children? (1 mark)
i) Use Excel’s COUNTIFS function to determine the number of :
i. women that are over 40 years with no children (1 mark)
ii. men that are over 40 years with no children (1 mark)
iii. women that are over 40 years with more than 2 children (1 mark)
iv. men that are over 40 years with more than 2 children (1 mark)
j) Prepare a descriptive statistics table for the Age variable.
• Use the Data Analysis button in Excel to do this. You should see the Data Analysis button on the furthest right hand side once you click on the Data tab in Excel.
• If you do not see the Data Analysis button, refer to the descriptive_statistics_in_excel PDF file for step-by-step instructions on how to prepare the descriptive statistics table.
• Copy and paste the prepared table to a word document (1 mark)
k) Use the information from the descriptive statistics table in part (j) of this question to answer the following question: Comment on the measures of central tendency and measures of variation for the age variable. (4 marks)
l) Use Excels percentile function to find the 65th and 90th percentile for the age variable. Interpret the calculated percentiles. (4 marks)
m) Use Excel’s Quartile function to find and interpret the first, second and third quartiles for the employees’ salaries (6 marks)
n) Find and interpret the interquartile range for employees’ salaries. (2 marks)

The Data Set for the end of semester Assignment is in a file called Data Set for Assignment.xls which presents Weekly Income (WI), Weekly Expenditure on Food (WEF), Highest Level of Education (HLE)1, Family Size (FS), and Gender of the Head of Household (GHH) for the a population of 1000 households.
• Column A consists of Households are named by number from 1 to 1000.
• Columns B to F record these households’ WI, WEF, HLE, FS and GHH, respectively.
• Column I presents 100 samples of households as your sample, consisting:
o 1st household is based on the first 3 digit of your student ID o 2nd household is based on the last 3 digit of your student ID
o 3rd – 5th is based on the day, month and the last 2 digits year of your birthday, respectively.
o 6th – 100th is randomly chosen.
• Example: if your student ID is: 181XX728 and you were born in 31st of March 1985 o 1st household is no. 181 o 2nd household is no. 728 o 3rd household is no. 31, 4th is no. 03, and 5th is no. 85 o 6th to 100th is randomly chosen
(PLEASE ENSURE THAT THERE ARE NO REPEAT HOUSEHOLD NAMES, except for the specific household, 1st to 5th), where each number is the name of the household in your sample.

B. What is the most frequent group in your WI sample data? What does that indicate in
terms of your data distribution?
C. Do you think your WI of sample data is normally distributed? Provide the “statistical reason” for your answer?

A. What is the top 10% and bottom 10 % of your WEF household values?
B. What is the probability that your WI values will be less than or equal to $200?
C. What is the probability that FS will be equal to 2?
D. Is there any outlier(s) in your sample data of WEF? Show the graph or prove for that!
If yes, what is the best statistic to measure the dispersity of your WEF?

A. What is the probability that the head of household is woman and her HLE is Primary? B. What is the probability that the head of household is man and has the College degree?
C. What is the proportion of having the Secondary as the highest degree from among males?
D. What is the proportion of having the Intermediate as the highest degree from among

E. Do you think that the events -gender of household head is male- and -having the College Degree- are independent?

A. After surveying many countries, Michael Scott, one of La Trobe University researchers believes that in order to be considered as the wealthy city, the average weekly income of thehousehold would be at least $1200. Based on the statement above, can you consider
your sample data is from a wealthy city? ( = 0.10)

B. Michael Scott also believe one city can be considered as the fertile city if the average of family size of household is greater than 8 (??? 8). Based on the statement above, can you consider your sample as the fertile city? ( = 0.05)
C. Michael Scott also believes one city can be considered as the obese city if the average spending of Weekly food expenditure of household is greater than or equal to 50. Based on the statement above, can you consider your sample as the obese city? ( = 0.01)
D. Based on the calculation above, which prediction is the most accurate and why?

A. What is the relationship between the amount of WEF and FS in your sample?
B. What is the relationship between the amount of WI and gender of the family head in your sample?
C. How the HLE and WI do affected the WEF in your selected sample?
NB: Use the linear regression line to estimate, R, R2 and graph in order to explain the relationship.
Task 8 (10 Marks)
As one of the largest city in USA, New York is also known as the food city. In this city people spend so much money in food, and Bill de Blasio, Mayor of New York believes, that the average amount of weekly income (WI) spent by households is not equal with your sample data. In order to prove that he collects a random sample of 50 households data of his city. (The data is attached on excel file New York tab).
Based on the Bill de Blasio’s statement, perform the analysis on hypothesis testing with level of significance of 5%. Do you think Bill de Blasio’s statement is correct?
You may consider the following assumptions while performing this test:
A. Populations for both of your sample and New York data are normally distributed and samples are independent.
B. Population variances of Weekly Food on Expenditure (WEF) are unknown and unequal.

Software requirement to complete assignment

Assignment structure
Refer to the Assignment Guidelines for assistance in completing Assignment 2. Remember to integrate academic theory into your assignment to support your arguments and proposals. Guidelines for preparation of assignments are provided on the StudyDesk for the course. These are in the form of short videos which explain how to carry out critical analysis of your selected project in relation to the topics for each assignment. You are strongly advised to watch these videos multiple times during the semester to ensure you have an understanding of the expectations of the course examiner.
To carry out this assignment, it will be necessary for you to read other texts and journal articles on PM Plans to gain an understanding of their role. It is recommended that you use the e-Books and electronic journals available from the USQ Library website.
By now, you should have chosen a project for which a project management plan (PMP) (sometimes described as a Project Plan or a Project Implementation Plan) is available. The PMP is a document that should adequately define what is to be done, who is to do it, when they are to do it, etc. If you are working on a very large project, use one of its sub-projects for your assignment. If the project is too large, it may increase your workload significantly and it is not recommended. Your PMP may be a single document or it may be a compilation of several documents prepared for the project. The PMP might be a plan that you produce yourself for this assignment, or it might be a plan that you import from your workplace, or from an external source. Note carefully that a project schedule or a Gantt chart by itself is NOT a PMP.
Your submission should have TWO PARTS.
• The first part is the body of the assignment and is a ‘critical analysis’ of your chosen PMP. It will contain a description of the project and a critical analysis of the structure and content of the PMP, fully supported by reference to relevant project management theory. It is not a critical analysis of the project itself, nor how it was managed. The focus should be on the PMP. Read the study materials and a wide range of other reference materials (including the PMBOK® Guide and the set text) to be clear on the purpose and content of a PMP as this topic is not widely covered in the literature. You will have to research relevant literature to complete this assignment, using the e-Books in the USQ Library.
• The second part is Appendix 1 which should be the ‘Project Management Plan’ (sometimes described as a Project Plan) for your chosen project. The PMP might be a plan that you produce yourself for this assignment, or it might be a plan that you import from your workplace, or from an external source. You must state clearly the source of the plan. NOTE: no marks are allocated for the actual PMP as it may not be original work in many instances. Any other attachments would become Appendix 2, 3, etc.
If you produce your own project management plan, it is strongly recommended that you use project management software for development of the project schedule and network. You may also use it to develop the project budget, but a spreadsheet can be equally useful. It is essential that you become familiar with the software at the earliest opportunity as it can be time-consuming to learn how to use it effectively. The course leader is not available to provide guidance on the use of the software, although other students may help through exchanges on the Discussion Board.

Provide the following:

Title page: Ensure that your document includes a normal report cover sheet or title page that would be expected of a professional document to provide details of report title, author, date, student number, etc. (this is in addition to the electronic mark sheet discussed above). This assignment is a professional academic paper so should be presented as one.
PART 1: CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE PROJECT MANAGEMENT PLAN
Executive Summary (200–250 words but this does not form part of the assignment word count). The executive summary comes before the table of contents. Read the guidelines and provide a formal Executive Summary with details of why the report was prepared, how it is structured, and what the important findings, conclusions and recommendations are. The Executive Summary relates to the analysis only. (SUGGESTION: this should be written last after you have finished the report.)
Table of contents: This should be a full listing with respective page numbers of executive summary, introduction, main sections, references, individual appendices, and full listing of all figures and tables.
1. Introduction (250 words): Briefly state why your report has been prepared, what project is being analysed, and how the report is structured. (Note – this may be similar to the introduction in assignment 1 if you have used the same project, but this is a new report, and you need to provide the information your reader needs to understand the report. You can use the same information in both assignments. There is no need to reference assignment 1 if you are using your original work.)
2. Project background (250 words): Your project description should describe the project and its context – what organisation is the project owner/sponsor, what this organisation does, why the project is being done, where it is located, etc. The description should contain enough detail for the reader to understand the reason behind each of the components of the plan – why it is included and its content and format.
3. Audience and structure of the Project Management Plan (1000–1500 words approximately)
•
o 3.1 Provide a critical analysis of who is intended to be the main audience of the PM plan? What do they need to know? How will they use the plan? What information needs to be provided?
o 3.2 What alternatives exist for the structure of a PM plan (examine and compare a range of theories and opinions here)? How should that information be provided? In what sequence? What does the theory say?
4. Contents of the Project Management Plan (1000–1500 words approximately)
Provide a critical analysis of the major sections of the plan and provide some theoretical framework for what is included in each section (e.g. Why has a project schedule been included, is it a meaningful document, was it prepared by the right people, does it contain the right information, etc.?) This explanation will be drawn from the study modules, text book, selected readings, and other sources. This discussion will probably cover most, if not all, knowledge areas covered under the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) (PMI 2013) in one form or another. It does not have to be under those headings but should clearly indicate that it covers all recognised areas covered by the various Project Management Bodies of Knowledge.
5. Conclusions (250 words): Summarise your findings from the analysis of your project management plan. What did you find out about the project plan? Does it conform to the recognised theory? What aspects are important and are of significance to project outcomes? What are its strengths and its weaknesses? (Focus here on the project plan and not on the theory).
6. Recommendations (250 words): What are your recommendations flowing from this analysis with regard to your chosen PMP? What changes should be made to your PMP for this project (or similar future projects)? Address the shortcomings identified in the conclusions. Again, focus on recommendations related to your PMP and not on the project itself.
List of references: Provide a complete list of references providing full details of all citations used in the body of the assignment.
Appendices: The PMP you have analysed will be attached as Appendix 1 (see below). Attach any additional appendices that relate specifically to the analysis following appendix 1. They should be numbered sequentially in the order in which they appear (Appendix 2, etc.).
PART 2: APPENDIX 1 – THE PROJECT MANAGEMENT PLAN
Appendix 1 should ideally be an actual project management plan for your chosen project and would be the sort of document that would be handed to a client/manager to illustrate how it is intended to manage the project through to completion. A project plan is often used to gain sponsor/client commitment, and should contain sufficient information to allow such a decision to be made with confidence. Make sure you understand what a project management plan is before you select a document for analysis.
It might be a document that you create yourself for this assignment or it might be an existing plan from your place of work or from another source if you don’t have access to one from your workplace. Either way,the source should be clearly indicated.
Appendices in addition to the PM plan may be attached to the report. If so, they should be numbered sequentially, e.g. Appendix 2, Appendix 3, etc.
