Carl Sagan’s Film Contact – Guide Questions for Film Reflection
Worth 50 points/5% of final grade
Due the last day of *regular* class

Length: at least 2 full, typed pages. MLA format
Double spaced, Times New Roman, 12 font size
You may also use these guide questions if you choose to do your second Oral Presentation (done near the end of the semester) on the film.
For the Film Reflection OR for an Oral Presentation, you would want to focus on ONLY ONE OR TWO of these questions. Your reflection or presentation should notjust be a bulleted list of answers to 7 questions. You should “dig more deeply” regarding one or two questions. You may philosophically analyze the film in a different way also. In other words, these questions are only a guide. You are not limited to only using these questions.

  1. Do you think scientists and/or more and more people in our “modern” times do NOT believe in God/supreme being? Why or why not?
  2. How do you think the deaths of Ellie’s parents affected her study and success in science and/or her disbelief in God?
  3. Why do you think someone might be willing to die to possibly make contact with extra-terrestrial life forms?
  4. How do you think the awe, love, passion Ellie has for discovery, the universe, science, other possible life forms, etc. compares to a belief, faith, awe in God/supreme being?
  5. What do you think of the intelligence needed to present to Ellie a seemingly alive version of her dead father? Why do you think the “Vegans” chose to do that?
  6. How does the public not believing her experience relate to Ellie’s not believing in God/supreme being?
  7. What does the end of the film suggest about the value of “scientific proof” versus a person’s report of an extremely important experience they can’t prove? What does this suggest about science, religion/faith?
