I didn’t’t realize how difficult it would be to choose one situation where I dealt with conflict.  I’ll go ahead and tell one of the most recent stories since it is fresh on my mind.

This story will probably end up being a bit self-damning but I think it is worth the time to share it.  For the first time in years I hired a new employee based on an excellent interview and years of success in our field of work.  He wanted more money than we could offer but because we had such a great interview he felt that the positive work environment would be worth the pay cut.

He and I ended up becoming really good friends outside of work so I was already aware of the fact that I was skirting the line and probably stepping over it from time to time during the course of our friendship.  For example we were both single and about the same age so we would go out and have a couple drinks or play pool/darts etc. but one particular night he had driven and after dropping me at home he had a minor accident on the way home which resulted in a DUI.

He basically paid an expensive lawyer to reduce the charge; however the financial cost of doing this immediately cascaded into other financial problems and immediately started affecting his work ethic and motivation.    As a his boss and friend I gave him some time to recover however my bosses started to ask questions after his company credit card came up delinquent.  After being reimbursed company funds for travel he spent the money on personal bills instead of the company card.

This caused me to have to give a written and verbal counseling to this person.  So now I had three conflicts happening.  1.  My internal conflict for my involvement in the night that the DUI was received.  2.  Conflict between this person and I because of disciplinary action.  3.  Conflict between my bosses and I because it gave the appearance that I wasn’t’t doing my job.

After a few months of this behavior (which was generously way too long) I basically gave him an ultimatum to start looking for a job and resign or I would have to let him go since the final written warning was already in place and there had been zero improvement in behavior.  He recently resigned and took a position with another company.  Lessons learned.
