Using the concepts learnt (e.g., classicism/positivism, deviance amplification, moral panic, etc.), critique the case of Satoshi Uematsu (The Straits Times, 27 July 2016), who killed 19 residents in a care home where he once worked.
Your analysis must address the following:
(1) Analyse the role of the media and its impact on our understanding of the crime/deviance in question. For example, how did the media present Uematsu and the case? Did media amplify the case? If so, illustrate the process through a content analysis (for example, you may wish to examine the headlines or words used). Was there ‘moral panic’? If so, what was the nature of the ‘moral panic’?
(2) Appraise the classical and positivist approach to this case.
(In your paper, do not focus solely on presenting the facts of the case. You should also write in one continuous essay and not break your paper into two sections.)
