When was the BRC founded and why? How has the main goals changed from past history to now?

Became a coordinated center in 2009. Focused on more awareness for resource and needs of specific populations (students) who need help, combined with health education.
What kind of characteristics does one need to have to make a difference in public health?

Need to have empathy and passion for target population. Need to finds what characteristics target population has in common.
What are some of the most common public health issues you see in a typical day or week at work? What is a daily routine like?
Everyday is different, mainly deal with stress & stress management, emotional well being. Try to limit distractions (housing, finance) EX: students with parents, veterans get checks to pay for VA, housing fees
Are the workshops and courses only for UCLA students or for anyone who needs help?

Mainly for UCLA students, or invited groups. Offer units and courses through community health sciences, usually an elective.
What are some of the philosophies and planning models you use to address a specific public health issue and target population?
Main focus is to reduce harm. Use the harm reduction theory. Try to produce less negative outcomes. EX: alcohol
What are some of the more challenging aspects you face as a health educator and how do you deal with them?

The more challenging aspects include budget and resources. Finance leads to not having enough resources. They need more people working there so they can offer more classes.
What kind of jobs is available in the public health field and what kind of credentials are needed?
Jobs for the future: AGING of human population is going to be a big boom. Prepare for anything that has to do with aging. Also use the APHA to keep up with conferences and meeting people to see where the field is going, staying proactive.

How is data used for your job as a health educator? Is it a big part of your job? Please explain.
Survey research is used a lot for the campus. The main focus is college students. Need college data to see where we can compare and improve.
Do you follow a certain code of ethics at work? If so, what are some of the main rules and ethical issues that come up in the workplace every day?

Attempt confidentiality. Respect 1 on 1 communication. They share offices at the BRC so it is hard to speak with someone. General problem: not biasing presentations culturally or with disability. Integrity and what students show bring out true bruin ethics.
Which target population do you see the most come into the BRC? Transfer students, parenting students, foster youth, or veterans?
New students, usually undergraduates because campus is so vast, can be a bit overwhelming.

Working at the BRC for 16 years. Got her bachelor’s of science in health education at CSUN, took time off school and then continued her education and got her Masters in Public Health from UCLA.
